Control panels V digital signage software

As digital signage software becomes more efficient in transporting data and setting up tasks within an IT network, could it replace control panels?

Why stop at digital signage software? As the broadcast television business has already found, IT-networked devices are capable of multiple tasks - ranging from editing to playout - that were previously handled by dedicated devices. Probably the only thing stopping some IT wizard developing a software suite that could handle all a-v applications is the cost or, to put it another way, the fact that there isnt enough money in it for them. You only have to look at some command and control applications, or the ASL-run installation at St Pancras, to see what is already possible.
